As New South Wales feels the effect of water restrictions and the drought, the no-water, no-mow synthetic lawn, which looks like natural grass, has come to Newcastle, with the lawn being installed in the backyard of local resident John Hersee of The Junction.
John, who has built an entertainment and play area for the family, said that he opted for the synthetic lawn because he was finding it hard to grow natural grass and because the synthetic lawn requires no maintenance.
“I was finding it difficult to grow grass because my backyard has some palm trees which create a lot of shade,” said Hersee.
“Unlike my natural grass, the synthetic lawn always looks perfect without me having to do any maintenance.
“I run a painting contractor business and I get a lot of clients, builders and architects come in and they think that the grass looks real.
“We have a timber elevated cubby house and slippery dip in the backyard so having the synthetic grass there makes it a good area for my daughter, and with another child on the way it will get a lot of use,” said Hersee.
The synthetic lawn system is based on a unique European concept, which has been brought to Australia by Pro-tech. Pro-tech uses the process of ‘fibrillation’ to split the fibres and give the lawn the grass-like look and feel.
John also had a Pro-tech synthetic putting green installed as part of the landscaping in his backyard. The synthetic putting greens play as true as a championship green and also require no maintenance or watering.
Along with the lawn product, the synthetic putting greens are distributed nation-wide with one recently installed in the front yard of Australian golf champion Peter O’Malley, who joins a host of international golfers to install a synthetic putting green.
