The NSW Department of Community Housing and Federal Department of Defence Housing have been trialling synthetic lawn in recent months to help curb ongoing maintenance costs and improve living standards at their premises.
Peter Malone, who currently works with the Western Suburbs Housing Cooperative – a division of Community Housing – originally came across the concept in his former post at Defence Housing.
“We recently installed a trial lawn at a brand new Five Dock complex for Defence Personnel and their families – one of the problems was that the kids had nowhere to play and real lawn would not have been possible because the backyard was inaccessible for lawn mowers.
“After one lady there decided to trial the synthetic lawn in her family’s backyard, everyone else in the complex wanted the same variety of lawn in their homes as well.
“I’ve also introduced the concept to the Western Suburbs Housing Cooperative in Sydney, which has more than 500 homes under management. A 72 square metre synthetic lawn is currently being trialled in a villa in Parramatta and it’s gone off very well.
“It was really a case of choosing between paving and cement as grass is hard to maintain in many of these backyards, and it’s also not environmentally friendly in term of water requirements.
“But synthetic lawn gives families an opportunity to have a soft area for kids to play on, and the tenants, and their neighbours, are very impressed.
“This is an excellent option for us because it also satisfies our objective to build or manage more energy-smart homes. With this synthetic lawn variety, the installers – Pro-tech – can also build a subterranean water tank that sits beneath the lawn so that any rainwater that falls on the surface can be captured and stored in the tank,” said Malone.
Pro-tech Corp installs synthetic Eco Logical lawns, which have the appearance and ‘feel’ of real grass, throughout Australia. Pro-tech expects the lawns to last up to 20 years with virtually no maintenance required. The company says there has also been considerable interest from local Council’s and schools who are struggling to keep their lawns in reasonable condition.
