As Australia feels the effect of water restrictions and the continuing dry conditions, many property developers and builders are installing no-water, no-mow synthetic lawns that look like real grass and are completely safe for children.
Australia’s largest supplier of synthetic lawns, Pro-tech Corp, can supply the lawn wholesale for installation by a landscaper or developer.
Hansen Yuncken, the group responsible for building a number of Childcare Centres around NSW, considered a number of products, but found Pro-tech’s synthetic lawn the best for the application. David Beslich is Director Childcare Development Solutions for Hansen Yuncken.
“Pro-tech lawns were used in all of the childcare centres because of its superior performance and appearance over the grass alternative as well as cost effective value when compared to other products,” said Beslich.
The lawn system is classed as a ‘soft-fall’ alternative in children’s nurseries and pre-schools. Hansen Yuncken also installed the lawn in childcare centres in Liverpool, Wyong and Shell Cove.
Bill Rorke, Managing Director of Pro-tech Corp said that many people around Australia have already installed the lawn because it is a great alternative to grass or paving.
“Landscaping companies and even nurseries are very keen to get their hands on synthetic lawns that have this kind of universal application. A number of schools in Melbourne have installed a synthetic lawn in their playground.
“We also believe that the lawn is an excellent way for houses to comply with the new BASIX regime in NSW, where newly developed properties are required to reduce water consumption by at least 40 percent.
“Synthetic lawns are particularly useful in these circumstances, especially since councils regard the lawn as soft-scape.
“Once the synthetic lawn is installed it requires no watering, almost no maintenance, will last for up to twenty years and depending on the area, costs less than a good quality paving installation.
“Many people find it very difficult to grow grass in certain locations at the best of times and with water restrictions in force it has become an even bigger chore.
“The lawn is porous, with water draining straight through to the ground beneath and lasts indefinitely with almost no maintenance.
“Enormous effort has gone into making the lawn look real, but we’re also looking at further developments, such as incorporating a reticulation process beneath the lawn, to capture rainwater, which can then be transferred to a rainwater tank,” Rorke said.
The synthetic lawn system is based on a unique European concept, which has been brought to Australia by Pro-tech. Pro-tech uses the process of ‘fibrillation’ to split the fibres and give the lawn the grass-like look and feel.
Lawns have been installed in properties in Sydney, ACT, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth and are available across Australia.
Pro-tech also installs synthetic putting greens, which play as true as a championship green, yet require no maintenance and watering.
