Synthetic grass is greening the environment with no water and minimal maintenance

New generation synthetic turf is providing the solution for public areas where growing lawn is no longer possible. The turf is being used successfully in busy open spaces, in shopping and commercial developments and even in road verges and roundabouts.

Australian company Pro-tech Corp is witnessing accelerated sales to both the domestic and commercial markets as synthetic lawns, driven by water saving considerations and reducing costs, become more popular.

“The drought and water restrictions across much of Australia have meant that local governments and commercial developers can no longer afford to keep lawns in many public areas and are looking at the options,’ says Bill Rorke, Director of Pro-tech Corp.

“Waterwise gardens still require watering and are often not suitable for areas where children play or people use the areas for access. Other options such as hard surfaces are certainly not great – aesthetically or environmentally.”

Pro-tech Corp’s Eco logical synthetic lawn is a third generation mono-filament synthetic lawn which looks like natural lawn and even feels like it.

“The only costs incurred are the initial purchase and laying and the turf has a life of around 20 years – with virtually no maintenance. If you think of the costs saved in mowing, fertilising, weeding and repairs in that time -along with the savings in water – then it is a very viable investment,” says Bill Rorke.

Pro-tech also offers a new patented version of Ecological lawn with a unique water capturing system as well. The new system uses a sub-surface membrane to collect the water and a storage system to save the water in an underground tank.

This provides a sensible alternative for public swimming pool surrounds, where water collected could be used to top up the pools, or for playing fields and parklands.

“Water captured from one synthetic turf playing field could be used to water surrounding grassed areas or in adjacent parks and gardens.”

“Our level of enquiry has never been higher from local government, developers, schools and other organisations,” says Bill.

A life of around 20 years can be expected from the product – rain, hail or shine and most components are recyclable, adding further to its environmental credentials.
