Wahroonga local installs Australia's largest synthetic putting green in his backyard
Wahroonga local and self-confessed golf nut, Steve Murphy, has had a 420mē
synthetic 'pitch and putt' putting green, the largest in Australia, installed in
his backyard.
The green, which plays as true as a championship green, yet requires no
maintenance and watering, was installed by Pro-tech Greens over four weeks and
includes 8 cup holes, 2 bunkers and numerous pitching areas. In all, 60 tonnes
of road base, 30 tonnes of metal dust, and 15 tonnes of sand were required, all
of which was craned into the backyard of the property in 1 tonne bags.
"I first saw the synthetic putting greens in a story in a golfing magazine which
talked about one installed in the front yard of Australian champion golfer Peter
O'Malley," says Steve.
"I thought that if O'Malley's putting had improved since using his synthetic
green, then it was good enough for me too.
"The area where the green has been installed was a parcel of land which didn't
get enough light to grow anything, and in light of the current water
restrictions I decided we were better off doing something that would look good
and add value to the property.
"I now use the green at least three times a week to practice pitching and
putting with my son and my handicap has since gone down to 16.
"I plan to have the green floodlit at night so I can use it more often," says
Steve.
Pro-tech's putting greens are professionally installed and can be designed and
contoured according to the owner's requirements and the specifications of the
property.
Pro-tech also distributes and installs no-water, no-mow synthetic lawns which
use a European 'fibrillation' technique to give the lawn a grass-like look and
feel.
Pro-tech can be contacted on 1300 554 334.
