A whole new look for driving ranges and practice areas
One of Australia's first synthetic grass tee-lines has been installed at
Burleigh Heads Driving Range in Queensland, and Pro-tech, the installers of the
tee line, believe this could be the start of a whole new look for driving ranges
and practice areas.
"Unlike the traditional rubber-backed, 'astro-turf' style mats that are used at
most driving ranges, a synthetic grass tee-line such as the one at Burleigh can
extend either partially or entirely across the driving strip," said Bill Rorke,
Managing Director or Pro-tech.
"The 50 millimetre polyethylene strand surface provides a much better feel when
using an iron or a wood, and is also more ideal to tee off from because you can
set your own tees at whatever height you wish. People often find that fixed tees
at driving ranges are either too high or too short. The design also offers the
golfer a much greater tee area to use.
"For those managing driving ranges and golf facilities, a synthetic tee line
also takes away the bother of having to constantly replace driving mats, which
can be a very expensive task for driving range operators and equally as
frustrating for patrons," said Rorke.
Peter Harrington, owner of the Burleigh Heads Driving range says the tee-line is
popular with his patrons, and is ideal from a business point of view.
"Customers come to our driving range knowing that they have a pure hitting
surface to tee off from and the tee-line has also allowed us to cater for the
better-than average golfer, which has increased our own business.
"The tee-line has the added advantage of requiring very minimal maintenance,
whilst providing a top quality grass area all year round," said Harrington.
A Pro-tech tee line can be installed on either a concrete surface or in grassed
areas. Installation of a synthetic tee-line such this on a grass area involves
first laying a 50 mm road base or a metallic layer, followed by 10 mm
closed-cell underlay. The synthetic turf, which is manufactured using a high
stitch-rate to provide the necessary density, is then installed on top.
Upon installation the surface is then sand-filled to within 5mm from the top of
the turf. Maintenance of the surface is limited to occasionally brushing sand
into the heavily used areas. This type of surface will significantly outlast
traditional tee-line mating, making it very cost effective.
Pro-tech also installs professional synthetic golf putting greens, which play as
true as a championship green, yet require no maintenance and watering.
Pro-tech putting greens are available nation-wide with one recently installed in
the front yard of Australian golf champion Peter O'Malley, who joins a host of
international golfers to install a synthetic putting green.
