A landscapers dream: A no-mow, no-water, no-maintenance lawn

It's new to Australia and for a landscaper it's almost too good to be true. A beautiful green lawn, which doesn't require mowing, weeding or feeding, and even more importantly, in light of current water restrictions in most parts of Australia, requires no watering.

These synthetic lawns are a new concept based on unique European 'fibrillated' technology, and are now available to landscapers in Australia from Pro-tech Lawns, the company that also installs professional synthetic golf greens.

The Pro-tech venture, which is now expanding throughout Australia, has been established by Bill Rorke, a former Australian international soccer representative, who is a keen amateur golfer.

Bill Rorke says that there is an increasing demand for this new form of fibrillated lawn, which looks and feels like the real thing, and is an ideal landscaping alternative for suburban gardens and a variety of commercial applications.

"We believe that this product has huge potential in the drought-prone Australian environment, particularly as most of our capital cities, including Sydney and Melbourne now have water restrictions.

"Looking after a backyard lawn is a problem weekend chore for many people, and quite often landscapers are asked to design gardens which are low-maintenance for this reason.

"There is also the situation in many townhouse and apartment developments, where there are small lawn areas which are shaded and where it is subsequently difficult, or impossible, to sustain grass growth.

"Lawn looks good in these areas and there are often no suitable garden alternatives for such locations.

"Our fibrillated synthetic lawn system is a perfect solution, as it requires virtually no maintenance, will last for at least ten years and, depending on the area, costs less than a good quality paving installation and can be wholesaled to landscapers," said Bill.

"There are numerous circumstances where you would use the product, such as where you can't grow grass due to lack of sun – we just installed a lawn system beneath a large Pepper Tree the other day.

"It is also usable around pool areas and is always a great alternative to pavement.

"When landscaping yards I'll often recommend the lawn system for sloping or banked-up areas, where it is too difficult to grow grass, or in situations where you can't properly access the area to install grass beds.

"A number of landscape architects have expressed interest in the lawn as it looks and feels real and would work well in regions where poor water quality prevents the growth of healthy grass.

"The Pro-tech Lawn is really one of the best products I've seen and the fact that it requires no maintenance or watering and is pet friendly makes it very appealing to homeowners.

"When I come across keen golfers, I find that the professional Pro-tech golf green is also a good landscaping alternative, which can be used on conjunction with the Pro-tech Lawn.

"They will almost always prefer a beautiful championship golf green in their backyard to practice their putting on, rather than urban stone or pavement," said John.

The installation of the lawn system starts with the preparation of the area. The landscaper starts by clearing the existing site and installing a porous crush-rocked base, which is then compacted to form a flat surface.

The Pro-tech lawn is pre-fibrillated prior to laying and then carefully filled with a mix of rubber granules and sand.

Bill Rorke says the lawns must be professionally installed and afterwards, the lawn system requires no maintenance and is designed to cope with all weather conditions.

He said that as well as the excellent appearance, the synthetic lawn has superb drainage qualities and can handle the most extreme weather conditions.

"The installation of the golf green is slightly more involved and the finished product plays as true as the world's best greens and can often be integrated with a lawn fringe," said Bill.
