Driving ahead with a synthetic putting green
Peter Harrington, PGA golf professional and owner of Burleigh Heads Golf Range, has recently installed a two-tiered, 40 square metre synthetic putting green which plays as true as a championship green, as well as an eight metre artificial tee-line surface – the first of its type in Australia.

Unlike the traditional rubber-backed, 'astro-turf' style mats that are used at most driving ranges, the eight metre long artificial tee-line, with 50mm strands, never wears out, plays like real grass and is built to take a high volume of players daily.

With the newly installed artificial tee surface, people can play on the same area daily without causing unsightly divots or having to move around the range because one area has grass pieces taken out of it.

Peter said that the no maintenance and playing qualities of Pro-tech's synthetic green and tee line were motivating factors in his decision to install the products.

"I had seen the turf around the place and needed a decent surface to practice on that is true and clean. The underlay helps to spin the ball like on a real green.

"Because it doesn't require any maintenance, it means that we don't need a full time green keeper and I get more time to spend with my wife and new baby boy Cody.

"We also don't get much grass growing in winter so the synthetic green is perfect, especially in these times of water restrictions," said Peter.

Peter, a regular player on the Australian golf circuit, attributes his recent win at the Coolangatta-Tweed Heads Pro-Am to his improved putting game.

"Once I started practising on the synthetic green it greatly improved my game; I saw immediate results and definitely started to putt better.

"Customers have also noticed a great difference in the facility. People come specifically to putt on the green. It has been good for business.

"The synthetic green is usable 52 weeks a year as opposed to real/natural greens which requires regular maintenance," Peter said.

Pro-tech's putting greens are professionally installed and can be designed and contoured according to the owner's requirements and the specifications of the property.

The synthetic putting greens are installed at the homes of a host of international golfers including Vijay Singh, Mark Calcavecchia, Sergio Garcia, Lee Janzen, Hale Irwin and Corey Pavin to mention but a few.
