Local resident practises putting in his own backyard
Padstow Heights resident and golf enthusiast Doug Krautz has found a way to fit
in some golf practice at home by installing a 40 square metre no-water,
no-maintenance putting green in his backyard.
Doug decided to install the Pro-tech synthetic putting green because he wanted
an entertaining and unique landscaping alternative for his 1283 square metre
backyard.
"I have developed a strong passion for golf in the last three and a half years
and thought that a putting green which can be used all year round was much more
appealing than having a pool in the backyard.
"I didn't want a conventional putting green because of the high cost involved
and the fact that I'd probably need a degree in horticulture just to keep it
weed-free. This Pro-tech green, however, doesn't need any maintenance or
watering," Doug said.
Since installing the Pro-tech putting green, Doug has been very popular with his
friends and two children, five-year-old Zuriah and seven-year-old Jamil.
"My place seems to be the rendezvous point for golfing days. My friends are
always coming around to practice. We even brought the TV outside to watch the
State of Origin while putting a few balls.
"My two kids also love it. Zuriah has surprised my friends with her amazing
putting skills and Jamil is always challenging them to backyard match play and
raves on about his two victories," he said.
The high quality synthetic putting green, which plays like a true championship
green yet requires no maintenance or watering, has also been installed for
champion golfers including Peter O'Malley, Nick O'Hern and Wayne Grady. Even
former Prime Minister Bob Hawke recently installed a Pro-tech putting green on
the roof of his five-storey Northbridge home.
The Australian company behind the putting green, Pro-tech, also installs
synthetic lawn systems based on a unique European technology which uses the
process of 'fibrillation' to split the fibres and give the lawn a grass-like
look and feel.
As part of the lawn system, Pro-tech has developed a water capturing system
which people can choose to install beneath the Eco Logical lawn. It makes the
collection of fresh rain water easy with the help of a sub-turf membrane or
water run-off matt which collects the water and stores it in a subterranean
water tank. The modular tank, which can sit beneath or adjacent to the lawn, can
then have its water pumped to a garden tap.
