Dover Heights resident brings his putting green to new heights
Local resident and architect, Andrew Travers, owner of a three level landmark
Dover Heights property, has installed a 140 square metre synthetic putting green
and lawn on his roof. He joins local golfing pro Peter O'Malley, who has one of
the synthetic putting greens in his front yard.
Mr Travers, who is the first person in Australia to install a facility such as
this on a private rooftop, says the green commands views extending from North
Bondi to Maroubra and the Sydney city skyline.
"I installed the Pro-tech putting green because previously it was just a flat
concrete roof, and it seemed like a great idea to be able to chip and putt a
couple of balls on the roof, with a glass of wine, and such a fantastic view as
the backdrop," said Travers.
"The entire area is 140 square metres, complete with a putting green including
four holes and purpose-designed contours and breaks, as well as a synthetic
fringe and chipping areas. A synthetic lawn has also been used for the project.
"I always used to bring guests up to the roof, and now it has a focal point,
which it never had before, and we've also got a fridge to store drinks, with a
deck planned to top it all off," said Travers.
Bill Rorke, Managing Director of Pro-tech, the company that installs these
putting greens and lawns, says they are a great entertainment and landscape
alternative, as well as providing great practice for the keen golfer.
"They are also an excellent investment for a luxury home – we've installed
putting greens in some amazing homes in places like Dover Heights, Balmoral,
Taren Point, Wahroonga, and Roseville," said Rorke.
"Even Australian champion Peter O'Malley has one in the front yard of his Sydney
home – also in Dover Heights.
"This particular project at Dover Heights was unique because normally we would
use road base underneath the surface, but this is obviously too heavy to put
above a normal house structure.
"To compensate, we used a high density polyurethane foam base, which was
engineered according to the specifications of the design of the putting green,
upon which the synthetic surface was laid. This is the first time anything like
this has been done in Australia," said Rorke.
Pro-tech Corp is Australia's leading supplier of professional synthetic putting
greens and synthetic lawns, with distribution throughout the country.
