The no-water lawn, which looks like real grass, will be among the many water efficient innovations on display at this weekend's H20 Show at the Powerhouse Museum (4-5 December, 2004).

The synthetic lawn was introduced to Australia by Pro-tech in 2003, and is now installed in the back and front yards of homes all over Australia. Using the European-derived technique of fibrillation, the synthetic fibres of the product are split to give the lawn a genuinely real 'look and feel'.

Bill Rorke, the founder and owner of Pro-tech, says the synthetic lawn has been progressing in leaps and bounds since its introduction to the market.

"Synthetic lawn has an obvious advantage in an increasingly drought stricken environment – many people don't want to part with their lawn simply because they can't water it or don't want to maintain it, so this is a water friendly alternative.

"Enormous effort goes into making the lawn look real, but we're also looking at further developments, such as incorporating a reticulation process beneath the lawn, to capture rainwater, which can then be transferred to a rainwater tank," said Rorke.

The synthetic lawn will be on display all weekend at the H20 Show at the Powerhouse Museum. Sydney Water is the organiser of the event.
